How to Make Beautiful Glass Ornaments with Paint Pens: Step-by-Step Guide

Hello! I’m so excited to share this tutorial with you today. One of my favorite things about the holidays is decorating our Christmas tree. Our tree is definitely one of the focal points in our home and we love to make it as beautiful as possible each year. One thing that we’ve been doing for the past few years is using paint pens on glass ornaments to add some color and fun to our tree.

These are really so easy and fun to do, especially if you have kids or grandkids who want to get involved in the process. You don’t need any special supplies other than paint pens and glass ornaments, which can be found at most craft stores. Once you have all those materials assembled, all you have to do is pick out a design that matches your décor and go for it.

I used red paint pens for my ornaments this year because they go perfectly with our red velvet pillows on the couch and a small red velvet bow on our mantelpiece next to the fireplace. I also used gold paint pens because they match our gold accents throughout the rest of our living room furniture and décor items — they’re everywhere. And finally, I decided on silver paint.

Here are some tips and tricks that will help you make your glass ornaments perfect

Step 1: Wash the glass ornament in warm, soapy water. Rinse it well and set it aside.

Step 2: Draw a design on the ornament using a paint pen or paint marker. You can sketch out your design first on paper and then transfer it to your ornament with a pencil. If you’re not sure what to draw, try making an abstract design or drawing your favorite holiday memory.

Step 3: Use acrylic paints or markers to color in the lines on your ornament. A few drops of water will help the paint spread evenly over the surface of your ornament. Let dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Step 4: Seal your ornament with clear coat spray paint so it will last longer and keep its shine when displayed indoors year-round.

Step 1: Wash the glass ornaments and let them dry completely.

Step 2: Open the paint pen and remove the cap. You’ll see there is a little sponge tip inside the pen which will hold the ink. Remove that sponge tip, then replace it back into the pen with your fingers holding it in place while you push it back in with another finger so that it stays inside while you’re working on this project. You don’t want to lose any pieces. Then shake up your pen until all of the ink comes out onto your paper towel or newspaper, since you don’t want any stray ink spots on your ornament when you’re done painting.

Start by cleaning your ornament. You can use rubbing alcohol to clean them off before you start, but I just wiped mine down with a paper towel and that was fine. Then, use the paint pen to draw on your design. This is a great way to make unique ornaments for gifts.

Draw whatever you want on the ornament — it’s totally up to you! Use different colors and sizes of paint pens if you want to get fancy.

Once they’re dry, use your brush to go over any areas that need touching up.
